Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) at Collaborative Counseling of Colorado

Break through blocks. Reconnect with yourself. Heal in a new way.

At CCC, we offer Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) as a transformative therapeutic approach for individuals and couples ready to explore deep emotional healing, trauma resolution, and meaningful growth.

What is Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)?

Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is an innovative and integrated mental health treatment that combines the use of the anesthetic drug ketamine with psychotherapeutic support. This therapeutic approach offers a more comprehensive and holistic experience compared to using ketamine alone.

KAP combines the powerful neurobiological effects of ketamine with skilled psychotherapy to help clients access difficult emotions, uncover inner insight, and create lasting change. Ketamine can temporarily loosen rigid thought patterns, quiet the inner critic, and allow for deep healing to emerge—especially when held within a safe, supportive therapeutic relationship.

Who Can Benefit from KAP?

KAP may be appropriate for those who:

  • Struggle with depression, anxiety, or PTSD
  • Feel stuck despite trying traditional therapy or medications
  • Are navigating grief, trauma, or major life transitions
  • Seek a deeper sense of self-awareness, connection, or meaning
  • Are part of a couple wanting to heal relational patterns or reconnect emotionally
  • Are preparing for or integrating other psychedelic or ceremonial work

How it works:

During a Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy session, the client takes a carefully measured and safe dose of medically prescribed ketamine. The ketamine is typically administered through a lozenge or another appropriate method. While the ketamine helps induce a unique altered state of consciousness, the psychotherapist guides the patient through the experience.

What to expect:

Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy sessions typically last longer than standard ketamine sessions, typically around 2 hours. The combination of ketamine’s effects and psychotherapy allows for a deeper exploration of thoughts, emotions, and past experiences. The patient may gain new insights and perspectives during the session.

What Does a Typical KAP Round Include?

A KAP round is a short series of sessions designed around your therapeutic goals. Each round typically includes:

  • 1–2 Preparation Sessions
Build trust, clarify intentions, and orient to the experience
  • 1 Ketamine Dosing Session
Conducted in a calming environment with clinical support throughout
  • 1 Integration Session
Process your experience and explore how to carry insights into daily life

Additional integration or therapeutic sessions can be added based on your needs and the complexity of your process.

What it can help with:

Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy has shown promise in the treatment of various mental health conditions, particularly those that have been challenging to address with traditional therapies alone.  It can also accelerate the change process of therapy. Some of the conditions it may help with include:

  • Treatment-resistant depression: KAP has demonstrated rapid and significant antidepressant effects for individuals who have not responded well to other treatments.
  • Anxiety disorders: Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy may be effective in reducing symptoms of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder and social anxiety.
  • PTSD and trauma-related symptoms: KAP may help individuals process and integrate traumatic memories, reducing the emotional impact of past experiences.

Before beginning Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy, clients will consult with a medical professional through our prescribing partner to determine if it’s a suitable option for their specific needs and circumstances. This integrated approach offers a unique and potentially transformative therapeutic experience, allowing individuals to delve deeper into their inner experiences and work towards healing and growth with the support of both ketamine and psychotherapy.
